Going Home Every Weekend
Some students will try to come home every weekend from the very beginning. They may try to keep their friends from high school, their significant other from the home town, and try to hang on to familiar life at home.
Parental tips:
-
Encourage your student to come home only twice during the first semester. This will help with the adjustment to Arkansas State University, and the “release” of the past life they know so well.
-
Help them understand that it is acceptable for them to stay at ASU and have fun. Some students feel they are “deserting” their parents by staying at school and being social.
-
Tell your student to get involved in on-campus activities and groups. Studies show that students who get involved are more likely to continue in college and graduate.
