Decision Making
Being in a new place and trying out new experiences can be a wonderful thing. However, in some cases, students can make poor decisions that can lead to serious consequences.
Parental tips:
-
Discuss with your student about decisions and consequences of such actions. For example, skipping class can lead to poor grades. Poor grades can lead to dropping classes. Too many dropped classes can lead to the financial aid being revoked.
-
Encourage your student to always be aware of their surroundings. Many of our students come from small towns and are somewhat naïve. Doors and windows should always be locked, even if you trust everyone on your residence hall floor. You don’t know everyone who comes to visit those individuals.
-
Help your student understand that trust should be earned, not freely given, especially when in a group or party situation. Never go to a social event alone. Always go in a pack, and never leave part of your pack.
